Origin and history

Saint-Génard Church, located in Marcillé, New Aquitaine, was built in the early twelfth century. Its initial architecture is characterized by a covered slate nave and a hollow tile bedside. Some elements, such as the trilobed window of the south side elevation and the fires, could date back to the 14th century, suggesting later modifications to its construction.

The wars of Religion caused the destruction of the primary buildings, while the escape (capitular room or refuge) disappeared without trace. In the 18th century, around 1740, the roof of the building was redone, as was the vault of the choir, probably at the same time. This work marks a significant first phase of restoration.

The 19th century saw several major interventions: in 1833, the north wall of the choir was rebuilt, followed in 1850 by the nave wall, and in 1854 by the extension of the bell tower. These changes reflect the structural and aesthetic needs of the time. The church was classified as Historic Monument by order of 27 August 1907, recognizing its heritage value.

Today, the Saint-Génard church belongs to the commune of Saint-Génard (code INSEE 79251), in the Deux-Sèvres department. Its state of conservation and successive transformations testify to its turbulent history, linked to religious conflicts and local architectural developments.
