Saint George's Church: inscription by decree of 17 February 1950

Origin and history

Saint-Georges Church in Auvers-Saint-Georges is a Catholic parish church dedicated to Saint Georges, located in the Essonne department. Its origin dates back to the 11th century, with a major reconstruction in the 15th century, probably linked to the destruction caused by the Hundred Years' War. This monument thus illustrates the medieval and post-medieval religious architecture of the region.

The building houses a remarkable artistic heritage, including a 17th century altarpiece, a 16th century bas-relief and 19th century stained glass windows in the nave. These elements reflect stylistic evolutions and successive additions over the centuries. The church was officially recognized for its heritage value by its inscription in historic monuments on February 17, 1950.

Located in the heart of Auvers-Saint-Georges, this church has played a central role in local community life, as a place of worship and gathering. Its architecture and works of art also reflect the religious and artistic practices of Île-de-France, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Today, it remains a symbol of the historical and cultural heritage of the Essonne.
