Saint George's Church (Box D 140): Order of 23 July 1981
Origin and history
The Saint-Georges Church of Loisy-en-Brie is a Gothic-style religious building built in the 15th century. It is dedicated to Saint Georges and is located in the municipality of Loisy-en-Brie, in the department of Marne. Its architecture and interior elements bear witness to late Gothic art, typical of this period in Champagne.
The church was classified as historical monuments by order of 23 July 1981. This classification recognizes its heritage and historical value, protecting its architecture and the remarkable objects it houses. It is now owned by the municipality and remains an emblematic place of local heritage.
Gothic churches such as Loisy-en-Brie played a central role in the life of medieval communities. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, reflecting the importance of religion in the social and cultural organization of the time. In Champagne, a region marked by strong agricultural and commercial activity, these buildings were often financed by the local lords or the bourgeois enriched by the wine and linen trade.
