Origin and history

Saint-Georges Church of Saint-Geoire-en-Valdaine is a Catholic religious building located in the department of Isère, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, it replaces an older church, which remains the base of the bell tower. This monument illustrates the medieval architectural evolution in the region, with subsequent additions such as the displacement of the western facade in the 19th century.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 24 December 1907, the church is owned by the commune. Its bell tower, partially rebuilt, and its structure reflect the construction techniques of the medieval era, while integrating later modifications. The precise location, 100 Place André Chaize, confirms its anchoring in the center of Saint-Geoire-en-Valdaine.

In the 19th century, works altered the façade and upper part of the bell tower, adapting the building to the needs or tastes of the time. These changes demonstrate the sustainability of its cultural use and its importance to the local community. Today, the church remains a symbol of the religious and architectural heritage of Isère.

Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its status as a protected monument and its role in the regional historical landscape. The Merimée database and religious heritage observatories provide complementary information on its architecture and history, strengthening its heritage value.
