Origin and history

Saint George's Church in Saint-Juire-Champgillon is a religious building dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. It underwent significant changes in the 19th century, giving it a mixture of medieval and modern architectural elements. Registered as a Historical Monument by order of 29 August 1984, it bears witness to the religious and cultural history of the region.

The commune of Saint-Juire-Champgillon, located in the Vendée department, was merged in 1827 with the neighbouring commune of Champgillon, then populated by 324 inhabitants. During the Revolution, it bore the name of La Smagne, with reference to the river crossing the village. This local historical context has influenced the development and preservation of this heritage.

The Saint-Georges Church is one of the four historical monuments of the municipality, alongside the castle of Saint-Juire, the former Order of the Knights of Malta and the gardens of the building. These elements illustrate the rich heritage of Saint-Juire-Champgillon, marked by religious, military and aristocratic influences.

The region's oceanic climate, with mild temperatures and moderate precipitation, was able to play a role in the conservation of church building materials. The municipality, classified as a rural with scattered habitat, has preserved its heritage despite a low population density, with 425 inhabitants recorded in 2023.

In 1992, the church and its surroundings served as the setting for the film L'Arbre, the mayor and the media library of Éric Rohmer, highlighting this local heritage. This filming contributed to the reputation of the monument, while combining its history with that of French cinema.

Finally, the precise location of the church, at 5 Place de l'Église, as well as its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments, underline its importance in the cultural and architectural landscape of the Vendée and the Pays de la Loire.
