Origin and history

The church Saint-Georges-et-Saint-Gilles de Santeuil, located in the Eure-et-Loir department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a building whose nave probably dates back to the 12th century. Its choir, rebuilt at the beginning of the thirteenth century, has architectural similarities with the cathedral of Chartres, suggesting the intervention of the same teams of masons and sculptors. This stylistic link, especially in masonries, was emphasized by specialists.

A notable feature of this church is its bell tower, which remains unfinished, making it a distinctive feature of the local heritage. The polygonal apse, added in the 13th century, completes this medieval structure. The building was classified as historic monuments by order of December 20, 1907, recognizing its architectural and historical value.

Most of the building, fortified, dates from the 12th century, while subsequent modifications, such as the apse, reflect the stylistic evolutions of the Gothic era. The choir and bell tower are the elements protected by this classification, attesting to their importance in the history of regional religious architecture. The church today belongs to the municipality of Santeuil, located near Chartres.
