Origin and history
The church of Saint-Germain d'Arsac was founded in the 12th century, when the first church of the commune was built. This unique nave building already had a transept and pentagonal apse, characteristic elements of Romanesque architecture. The southern gate, adorned with four archvolts, remains the only significant vestige of this period, integrated in a forebody against the southern facade. This portal, classified as a Historical Monument since 1908, illustrates the Romanesque style with its sober decor and harmonious proportions.
In the 19th century, around 1878, the church underwent a complete overhaul under the direction of architect Gustave Alaux. This campaign gave rise to the present pentagonal abside, the transept, the west porch and the inner vaults, deeply transforming the interior and exterior appearance of the building. Only part of the Romanesque portal was preserved, while the rest of the structure adopted a characteristic style of the second half of the 19th century. The church, as a whole (excluding classified portal), was listed as a Historic Monument in 2006, recognizing its heritage value.
The location of the church, on Avenue de Ligondras in Arsac (Gironde), reflects its anchoring in the local urban fabric. Owned by the municipality, it reflects the architectural and religious evolutions of the region, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The successive protections (classification in 1908, registration in 2006) underline its historical importance, especially for its Romanesque portal, a rare example preserved of this period in the region.
