Origin and history

The church Saint-Germain de Buzancy, located in the department of the Ardennes (Great East), is a religious building whose entrance gate, adorned with a statue of Saint Germain surmounted by a tympanum with roses and trilobed arches, dates back to the 13th century. This portal, typical of the nascent Gothic architecture, is accompanied by a nave partially rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries, while the choir and the bas-cotés, contemporaries of the portal, are decorated with leafed capitals evoking those of the cathedral of Reims. Inside, the furniture includes carved oak stalls, a baldaquin high altar and two side altars richly decorated with statues, reflecting the artistic and spiritual importance of the place.

The church is part of a historical context marked by its role as dean in the 13th century, before being replaced by Grandpré in the following century. It depended on the abbot of Mouzon for the snack of the cure and belonged to the diocese of Reims, a major religious centre. The Roman road linking Reims to Trier, completed by a road to Buzancy, favoured the development of the village. The building also served as a burial place for the Marquis d'Anglure, a local noble family, and its bells, one of which was dated 1690 and offered by the Marquis de Buzancy and his Scholastic wife of Anglure, were carried away by the Germans during the First World War.

Ranked a historical monument by decree of 5 February 1920, Saint-Germain church illustrates both the medieval heritage of the Ardennes and the vicissitudes of modern history. Its architecture combines regional influences, as evidenced by the similarities with the remise sculpture, and later additions, such as lateral altars dedicated to the Virgin and Saint Nicholas. Protected movable objects, such as stalls or shawls, underline its status as places of worship and memory, anchored in the religious and cultural landscape of the Great East.
