Origin and history
The church Saint-Germain de Saint-Germain-Beaupré, located in the Creuse department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a religious building whose present structure is the result of several periods of construction and transformation. The unique vessel, accompanied by two side chapels, features a flat-side choir and a characteristic bulb bell tower, topped by a false lantern in retreat from the western wall. The southern chapel, remarkable by its vault with liernes and thirdons, bears witness to a refined architectural know-how for the time.
The seigneurial chapel, dating from the early 16th century, is one of the oldest elements preserved in the building. It was built by the Foucauld family in the last quarter of the 15th century, while the nave, porch and bell tower were thoroughly redesigned at the end of the 18th century (notably in 1787, date attested). The monument also underwent major repairs in the 19th and 20th centuries, notably after the damage caused by lightning in 1875, which seriously damaged the bell tower. The architect Fabre, based in Guéret, intervened in 1832 for repairs.
The church, although very transformed over the centuries, preserves traces of its medieval origin, with parts dating from the twelfth century. The southern chapel, vaulted in stone, and the arched door in braid illustrate the influence of late Gothic styles. Classified as a Historic Monument, the Saint-Germain Chapel was listed by decree of 27 July 1937, highlighting its heritage value. Today, the building belongs to the commune and remains a major architectural and historical testimony of the Limousin region.
