Origin and history
The church Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, located in Glomel in the Côtes-d'Armor department, is a religious building dating back to the 16th century. The choir, transept and base of the tower date from this period, while the porch, Gothic style, could date from the 18th century. The nave was rebuilt in 1883 by architect Le Coz, and the choir was restored in the early 19th century. The church furniture includes an eagle-shaped lutrin from the second half of the 19th century and a Virgin with the Child, a 14th century statuary group, reflecting the historic richness of the site.
The church has been protected as historical monuments. The bell tower was first registered by order of 22 December 1927, a measure subsequently repealed. Then, the entire building, including the choir, the transept, the nave and the porch, was inscribed in full by order of September 19, 2018. These protections underline the heritage importance of this monument, owned by the municipality of Glomel.
The building reflects the architectural and artistic evolution of Brittany, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Its Gothic porch, stained glass windows and furniture, such as the 14th century Virgin with Child, illustrate the varied stylistic influences that marked its history. The reconstruction of the nave in 1883 and subsequent restorations also show the commitment of the inhabitants and local authorities to the preservation of this religious and cultural heritage.
The location of the church, in the heart of Glomel, has made it a central point of community life for centuries. Parish churches such as Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois played a major role in the social and spiritual life of Breton villages, serving as a gathering place, prayer and celebration of the important events of local life. Today, it remains a symbol of the region's historical and cultural identity.
