Origin and history

The church of Saint-Germain, located in Saint-Germain-l This project was led by the monks of the Chaise-Dieu, who installed a priory there and held the seigneury and local justice. The village, fortified in the 14th century by probable order of Charles V, sees the addition of a defensive tower north of the transept, symbol of this troubled period.

Between 1491 and 1518, under the abbatiate of Jacques de Saint-Nectaire, the original Romanesque choir was replaced by a flamboyant Gothic choir, marking a major stylistic evolution. The building, rebuilt in the 19th century, preserves medieval defensive elements and classified decorations, such as a painted panel and a statue of Christ. His inscription in the Historic Monuments in 1955 consecrated his heritage value.

The church thus illustrates almost a thousand years of history, mixing religious, seigneurial and defensive functions. Its hybrid architecture — Romanesque, Gothic and medieval — reflects the political and artistic transformations of the region, under the influence of local abbeys such as the God's Chair. The northern tower and the flamboyant choir are the most striking testimonies.
