Origin and history
Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais de Langon Church, located in the Gironde department, finds its origins in the 4th quarter of the 13th century with a simple nave and a flat bedside. The building evolved until the end of the 15th century, when the vaults were completed. This Catholic monument, marked by the religious and political history of the region, suffered partial destruction in 1576 during the Wars of Religion (by the Huguenots) and in 1652 during the Fronde.
In the middle of the 19th century, the church was radically redesigned under the direction of architects Henri Duphot and Léo Courau. The nave is rebuilt and vaulted, side bottoms are added, and the western facade is changed. The bell tower, inspired by the South Tower of Chartres Cathedral, was erected in 1859, giving the building a slender silhouette. A stained glass window paid tribute in 1891 to missionary Louis Beaulieu, a native of Langon and martyr in Korea, bears witness to his local anchor.
Ranked a historical monument in 2006, the church embodies the architectural transformations and historical upheavals of the Gironde, mixing medieval heritage and 19th century restorations. Its location, between Rue Saint-Gervais and the banks of the Garonne, makes it a visual and spiritual landmark for the city of Langon.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) underline its role in the religious and architectural heritage of New Aquitaine, as well as its full state protection. The building now belongs to the commune and remains an active place of worship, as the references to the Catholic Church in Langonnais attest.
