Origin and history

The church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais de Marsac is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Marsac, Charente (New Aquitaine). Initiated in the second half of the 12th century, it illustrates the Romanesque architecture of the region, marked by a unique nave and a forechoir surmounted by a dome. This monument, partially redesigned in the 15th century, incorporates Gothic elements like a vault on cross of warheads in the choir, which ends with a flat bedside.

The church was listed as historical monuments in two stages: a first protection order dated 4 January 1934, followed by a second on 29 December 1941. These inscriptions highlight its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. The nave, initially covered with a frame, was vaulted in a cradle in 1885, partially changing its interior appearance.

The plan of the building remains simple, with three spans illuminated by narrow windows, a bell tower overlooking the forearm, and a communal property today. Although the sources do not mention historical figures related to its construction, its inscription to the heritage reflects the importance of rural churches in the medieval social and religious organization in Poitou-Charentes, an area marked by a high density of Romanesque buildings.

The available data from Wikipedia and Monumentum also specify its exact address (79 Rue du Centre, 16570 Marsac) and its Insee code (16210), confirming its territorial anchor. The accuracy of its location is considered "very satisfactory" (note 8/10), and photographs licensed under Creative Commons document its current state.
