Origin and history

The church Saint-Gilles de Saint-Gilles-Pligeaux is a Catholic religious building located in the Côtes-d-Armor department in Brittany. Built between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, it adopts a Latin cross plan, typical of the religious architecture of this period. Its earlier massif was rebuilt in the 17th century, between 1644 and 1649, while subsequent works concerned the tower, the belfry-carpent (remade in 1879) and the arrow (rebuilt in 1928).

The carved sandstones of the collaterals and transept present a varied decor, mixing animal scenes, busts of characters and plant motifs. These elements bear witness to the influence of the sculptor carpenter Le Loergan, active in the 15th century. The building, classified as a historical monument in 2003, also includes the walls and soil of adjacent cemetery plots in its protection.

The church of Saint-Gilles, owned by the municipality, illustrates the architectural and artistic evolution of the Breton churches, marked by centuries-old restoration and beautification campaigns. Its classification in 2003 underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its interior decorative elements, such as carved sandstones.

The location of the building, at 6 Rue de l'Eglise in Saint-Gilles-Pligeaux, is attested by data from the Merimée database. Its Insee Code (22294) links it administratively to the district of Saint-Brieuc, confirming its anchoring in the religious and historical heritage of Brittany.
