Origin and history
Saint-Hérie Church is a Catholic church located in Matha, Charente-Maritime department, New Aquitaine region. Partly dated from the 12th century, it features a nave of Romanesque style and a choir of primitive ogival style. The west facade, a north span and four south spans remain from the Romanesque period, while the entrance, adorned with three carved archvolts, and a four-archvolt window on the first floor illustrate the architectural richness of the building.
Originally, the church was given to the abbey of Saint-Jean-d'Angély at the end of the 11th century, which took care of its rehabilitation. Destroyed in part during the Wars of Religion, it was rebuilt in the 15th century. Subsequent changes include the demolition of original vaults, replaced by plaster ceilings, and the transformation of Romanesque columns into square pillars. These adjustments reflect the successive adaptations of the building to liturgical and structural needs.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of April 10, 1912, the Saint-Hérie church retains remarkable elements such as carved capitals, lateral arches and traces of the ancient vaults in the sanctuary. These remains attest to its architectural evolution, marked by Romanesque and Gothic styles, as well as by historical vicissitudes, including the religious conflicts that affected the region.
Today, the church belongs to the commune of Matha and remains a major testimony of the religious and artistic heritage of Charente-Maritime. Its initial plan, divided into a nave and two arched lower sides in a cradle, has been partially altered, but the preserved elements offer a valuable insight into medieval construction techniques and their adaptation over the centuries.
