Abbaye de Saint-Jean-d'Angély - Beneficiary of donation Head of Rehabilitation (XIe).

Origin and history

Saint-Hérie Church is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Matha, Charente-Maritime. Its origin dates back at least to the end of the 11th century, when it was mentioned in an act of donation to the abbey of Saint-Jean-d'Angély. This document also attests to its degraded condition, requiring rehabilitation work by Benedictine monks.

During the Wars of Religion, the church suffered partial destruction, like many of the area's cultural buildings. This damage leads to a major reconstruction in the 15th century, marking an architectural and historical evolution of the building. The building thus preserves traces of these two hinged periods, mixing Romanesque and Gothic elements.

In 1912, Saint-Hérie Church was officially classified as French historic monuments, recognizing its heritage and architectural value. Today, this protection allows us to preserve a witness to the religious and political transformations that marked the southwestern part of France in the modern era.
