Origin and history

The Saint-Hermeland church, located in Saint-Herblain in the Loire-Atlantique, is a rare example of Gothic architecture in the Nantes agglomeration. Built in the 15th and 16th centuries, it is dedicated to Hermeland in Indre, a local saint and evangelizer of the country of Nantes. Its flat bedside, typical of English influence, and slate-frame bell tower reflect regional specificities. The building, modified in the 18th and 19th centuries, preserves medieval elements like a polychrome cradle vault decorated with dragon heads.

The church underwent major enlargements in the 19th century, including the extension of the nave, the reconstruction of the choir and the addition of sacristies. Its blue stained glass windows, destroyed in 1943 and restored from 1987 onwards, illustrate the life of Saint Hermeland. Furniture, such as the neogothic high altar (1889) or the neoclassical confessional (1816), testify to stylistic evolutions. Classified as a historical monument in 1925, it has also housed relics of the saint since 1848, strengthening its spiritual role.

Originally, the church dominates a forested territory, a former hunting site for the Counts of Nantes. Built on a promontory to escape the floods of the Loire, it uses local materials: granite for walls and tuft for ornaments. Its history reflects the Christianization of Brittany under the Dukes John V and Francis II (XV century), a period of reconstruction after the War of Succession. Despite the bombings of 1943, it retains its 19th century appearance, with a length of 87 meters and walls of 8 meters high.

The parish, founded in 2003, is part of the diocese of Nantes. The church houses notable works such as the neoclassical retables of Sainte-Anne (XVIIe, repaired in 1785) and the Virgin (1839), or the oak pulpit (1815). Nine medallions and six marouflé canvases, restored in 2022-2023, celebrate the local saints. The court and the square were renovated in 2022, emphasizing its anchor in communal life.

Father Célestin Ringeard, future monk of Tibhirine, was vicar there in 1962. The building, spared by urbanization until the 1960s, contrasts with other medieval churches in the 19th century. Its inscription in 1925 and that of its furniture in 2014 (master altar, altarpieces, pulpit, statues) attest to its heritage value. The relics of Saint Hermeland, reported in 1848, make it a major place of devotion.
