Origin and history
The church of Saint-Hilaire de Brezons, located in the Cantal region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is an ancient castral chapel built on a promontory. Its origins date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, as evidenced by the Romanesque elements preserved in the choir and nave. This monument, originally linked to a castle today disappeared, was profoundly transformed in the 15th, 16th, 17th and 19th centuries, with the addition of side chapels, a bell tower, and the modification of the vaults and the southern gate.
The semicircular bedside and the southern chapel are decorated with modillons, characteristic of Romanesque art. The choir, vaulted in cul-de-four, has an archature and historic capitals, while the nave and the lateral chapels are covered with carved-keyed dinghy vaults. The southern gate and the bell tower, of neo-Roman style, date from 1898 and 19th century respectively. The church also houses 19th and 20th century stained glass windows, some of which were made by the glassmaker Borie du Puy.
Partially classified as early as 1927 for his bedside, the Saint-Hilaire church was fully listed as historical monuments by order of 16 July 2019. This monument illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of the region, mixing medieval heritage and modern restorations. Its burning under broken arch in the southern chapel and its modillons recall its castral past and its original function within the local community.
