Origin and history

The Saint-Hilaire church of Azay-sur-Thouet, built between the 4th quarter of the 15th century and the 1st quarter of the 16th century, illustrates the religious architecture of the late Middle Ages. His plan reveals disaxements between the nave and the choir, flanked by lateral chapels, while his bell tower, adjacent to the south wall, communicates with the adjacent spans. Two ballets (a spiral staircase) animate the structure: one between the bell tower and the nave, the other against the west façade, adorned with a Gothic portal with finely-worked columns, extended with pinnacles.

The inner vaults constitute an exceptional set of the late medieval period. The nave has octopartite crossovers with discoidal keys decorated with floral motifs, while the span under bell tower has a quadripartite vault, connected by the hole of the bells. Nervures and supports vary with great diversity, and traces of wall decor remain. The side chapels, with armored arch keys, bear witness to the symbolic and social importance of the building to the local community.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 24 October 1997, the church belongs to the municipality of Azay-sur-Thouet (Deux-Sèvres). Its location, specified as satisfactory (note 7/10), corresponds to the address 6 Rue de l'Eglise, in a rural context marked by the heritage of the medieval Poitou. The building, open to the visit, embodies both an architectural heritage and a place of collective memory.
