Origin and history

The church of Saint-Hilaire de Cenan, located in La Puye, has its origins in the late 11th century, when the parish was founded. The oldest parts of the building, namely the choir and the avant-cheur vaulted in the middle, date from this time. The rectangular nave, added later, completes this medieval structure. These elements reflect a religious architecture typical of the region at this time, combining simplicity and functionality for a growing rural community.

In the 16th century, modifications or extensions could be made, although the sources do not specify their exact nature. However, it was at the end of the eighteenth century that major transformations were carried out: the sacristy, surmounted by the residence of the priest and the bell tower, was built. This period also coincides with the installation of liturgical furniture, reflecting the growing needs of an active parish. The church then became a central place for religious ceremonies and community life.

From 1776 onwards, the church of Saint-Hilaire de Cenan was adopted by the Acadians, a francophone community exiled from North America. They celebrated unions, births and buried their deceased in the cemetery. This historical link with the Acadians adds a unique cultural and memorial dimension to this monument, highlighting its role as a place for gathering and preserving a collective identity. The building, registered as a Historic Monument in 2002, remains today the property of the municipality of La Puye.
