Origin and history
Saint-Hilaire church in Longeville-en-Barrois is a Catholic church located in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, it is distinguished by its architecture combining Gothic and Renaissance elements. Its Renaissance porch, decorated with a painted tympanum and a statue of the Virgin with grapes, is one of the most remarkable elements of the building. The interior houses a carved pulpit, a classified organ of gallery inaugurated in 1903, the work of Charles Didier-Van Caster, as well as a statue representing the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian.
The church choir was restored in 1854, while the cross of the transept is surmounted by a bell tower with a clock and bells. The exterior is decorated with a frieze of roses and carved heads, adding to its historical character. Classified as historical monuments in 1990, the church belongs to the commune and is a major architectural and artistic testimony of Lorraine.
The 1990 classification specifically concerns the Saint-Hilaire church, including its porch, tympanum, and decorative interior and exterior elements. The precise location of the building is indicated as being at 1 Rue de l'Orme, in the commune of Longeville-en-Barrois, attached to the arrondissement of Bar-le-Duc. The church is a typical example of Lorraine Hall churches, reflecting the religious and cultural importance of the region throughout the centuries.
