Origin and history

Saint-Hilaire de Paillet Church, located in the Gironde department in New Aquitaine, is a 12th-century Roman Catholic religious building. It is distinguished by its choir and semi-circular apse, the only remains of this period, characterized by archvolt windows and historic capitals. The apse, typical of the Aquitaine style, is illuminated by simple, gelatinous berries resting on coupled columns. The monument once belonged to the jurisdiction of Rions, a detail revealing its local historical significance.

In the 17th century, the church was enlarged by the addition of a chapel dedicated to St.Antoine and a north side, financed in part by the Count of Vassan, who acquired the rights of bench and burial. The nave and south side were profoundly reshaped in the 19th century, during which time the bell tower was built in 1870 according to the plans of architect Jules Mondet. The latter incorporated the coat of arms of Bishop Donnet on the west side of the tower. Inside, the nave is covered with a false vault in a broken cradle, while the sides are capped, reflecting successive architectural transformations.

The sculptural novel program, though limited, offers remarkable symbolic representations. Outside, bedside berry capitals depict allegorical scenes, such as predatory animals or human figures associated with concupiscence, interpreted as moral warnings. Inside, two baskets re-used in the 19th century in the southern bay of the bedside represent a bird and David's fight against Goliath, although erosion has altered some sculptures. The modillons, redone in the 19th century, present a sober decoration, contrasting with the original iconographic richness.

The church was partially classified as historical monuments in 1925, with the inscription of its apse and choir. This status protects an artistic and architectural heritage witness to stylistic evolutions, medieval beliefs and modern restorations. The 17th century altarpiece, included in the general inventory of cultural heritage, houses a painting by Saint Hilaire painted in 1846 by Jean-Baptiste Dubourdieu, as well as statues from the 14th and 15th centuries, highlighting the continuity of worship and sacred art on this site.

The adjacent cemetery, now extinct, was marked by a mission cross erected in 1956, a symbol of the religious revitalization of the countryside in the nineteenth century after revolutionary upheavals. This cross, always visible to the east of the building, recalls Paillet's social and spiritual history, between decline and renewal of Catholic practice. The church, owned by the commune, remains a place of memory and worship, open to the public and anchored in the landscape of the Entre-deux-Mers.
