Origin and history
The church of Saint-Hilaire de Sermaise, located in the department of Maine-et-Loire in Pays de la Loire, is a religious building whose Latin cross-shaped architecture is unique in the area. Its history dates back to at least the 12th century, although traces suggest an origin around the year thousand. The addition of a seigneurial chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist in the 15th century, commissioned by Louis de Beauvau, Sénéchal d'Anjou during the reign of King René, marks an important step in his architectural evolution.
The church was listed as historic monuments in 1973, recognizing its heritage value. In the 1990s, the foundation La Sauvement de l'art français contributed financially to its restoration, particularly for the 15th century masonries and windows, which were severely degraded. These interventions demonstrate efforts to preserve this religious and architectural heritage.
Located at 2 Place du Mail in Sermaise, the church belongs to the municipality and remains a representative example of medieval Christian architecture in Anjou. His Latin cross plan and seigneurial chapel illustrate the stylistic influences and social dynamics of the time, including the links between seigneurial power and religious buildings.
