Origin and history

Église Saint-Hilaire de Villiers-sur-Loir is a Catholic church located in the Loir-et-Cher department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Although its origins date back to the 12th century, the present building was thoroughly renovated in the 15th and 16th centuries, especially after the destructions of the Hundred Years' War. It was classified as historic monuments in 1994, recognizing its exceptional heritage value.

The current construction dates mainly from the first half of the 16th century. The nave, vaulted with wooden panelling, has carved and dated entrances of 1540, while two chapels close the transept. In 1927, murals were discovered on the north and south walls of the nave, representing various themes such as the Dit des Trois morts et des Trois vives, scenes of Saint-Éloi's life, or even aldermen in Henry III costume.

The church also houses an imposing bell, mentioned in heritage reports. Protected elements include the entire building as defined by the 1994 Classification Order. The property belongs to the municipality of Villiers-sur-Loir, and the monument remains a major architectural and artistic testimony of the Renaissance in the region.

Available sources, including Monumentum and Wikipedia, highlight its historical and religious importance. Data from the Merimée database confirm its exact address: 4 Rue de la Couture, 41100 Villiers-sur-Loir, in the department of Loir-et-Cher (code Insee 41294).
