Origin and history
The Saint-Hilaire church of Puynormand has a composite structure, where the apse and part of the facade date from the Romanesque period. This ancient vestige contrasts with the body of the building, rebuilt in the sixteenth century, which is characterized by three naves of two spans each. The octagonal bell tower, typical of the religious architecture of this time, dominates the whole and bears witness to stylistic evolutions between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 24 December 1925, the church illustrates the transition between late Romanesque and Gothic styles. The protection concerns the entire building, now owned by the municipality of Puynormand. Its design and decorative elements reflect the liturgical and community needs of a rural parish in New Aquitaine, while integrating 16th century architectural innovations.
The location of the church, in the heart of the village of Puynormand (code INSEE 33347), highlights its central role in local life for centuries. The available GPS coordinates place the monument at approximately 103 Le Bourg Sud Ouest, although cartographic accuracy is assessed as satisfactory a priori (level 6/10). This church remains a historical and cultural landmark for the Gironde, between Bordeaux and the surrounding vineyards.
