Origin and history

The church Saint-Hippolyte de Verjon, located in the Ain department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, was built between the second half of the 15th century and the 16th century. It is representative of the religious architecture of this period, marked by late Gothic influences and renaissance. Its designation as historic monuments in 1980 was a testament to its heritage significance, although its later transformations, particularly in the 19th and Second World War, altered some of its original elements.

The lords of Vernon played a key role in building the church chapels, reflecting their local influence and commitment to the development of religious heritage. Over the centuries, the church has suffered losses and modifications, but retains remarkable elements that testify to its history. Today, it benefits from restoration work carried out by a local association, the Committee of Restoration of the Church of Verjon, in collaboration with the heritage bodies. These efforts aim to preserve its architecture, interior decorations (tables, stained glass) and furniture, such as the purchase of a new altar.

The church of Saint-Hippolyte is a still active place of worship, owned by the municipality of Verjon. Its classification in the Mérimée base and its official registration in 1980 make it a protected site, open to the visit. Its location at 86 Rue du Puits Rouge makes it a point of interest for lovers of religious architecture and local history. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its role in the cultural heritage of Ain and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
