Origin and history

The church of Saint-Honoré de Cagny is located in the department of the Somme, within the community of Amiens Métropole. Its history was marked by a major transformation in the 19th century, reflecting the demographic and architectural evolution of the commune.

The present building is the result of an expansion carried out in the second half of the 19th century, initiated by Baron Latapi, then mayor of Cagny. A first project by architect Henri Antoine in 1864 was rejected, but Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, involved in the restoration of the cathedral of Amiens, finally validated a plan to preserve the original choir. The latter, built in limestone in 1614, was thus preserved.

The nave, rebuilt in brick, was enlarged by two sides to accommodate a growing population. This expansion allowed the addition of side chapels and a baptismal chapel. The facade, adorned with a stone gate dated 1868, is surmounted by an arrow bell tower covered with slate. Inside, notable elements include an artificial cave and cast iron columns, made by the Amienese founder Morvillez.

The church thus illustrates a fusion between the 17th century heritage and the 19th century adaptations, typical of architectural transformations linked to the industrialization and demographic growth of the rural villages of the region.
