Origin and history
The church of Saint-Humbert de Maroilles is a three-vessel religious building without transept, whose facade is marked by a central porch tower. The lower sides, decorated with volutes, and the entrance gate are made of limestone, while the bell tower, surmounted by a polygonal arrow, is surrounded by four pyramidions. The nave is covered with a two-paned roof, and the choir has a polygonal rump with drains.
The present church, built in the 16th century, was entirely rebuilt in the 18th century in three distinct phases. Between 1729 and 1737, the tower of the bell tower and its covering were taken over. In 1738, the construction of the side walls began, and the choir was renovated in 1768. These successive transformations have shaped the architectural aspect we are experiencing today.
Classified as a Historic Monument, Saint-Humbert Church is protected by an inscription order dated November 25, 1969. It belongs to the commune of Maroilles, in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. Its architecture reflects the stylistic evolutions of the 17th and 18th centuries, while preserving structural elements inherited from the 16th century.
