Église Saint-Jacques (former collegiate Saint-Laurent): by order of 1 October 1930

Key figures

Hugues de Chalon - Bishop of Auxerre (XI century) Founded the original St. Lawrence College.

Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jacques de Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire, built in the 15th century, replaces a Romanesque collegiate of the 11th century, the collegiate Saint-Laurent, founded by Hugues de Chalon, bishop of Auxerre. This Gothic monument is distinguished by its facade decorated with an openworked square platform, interpreted as an old watchtower. Its interior, structured in a four-span nave and low side, is vaulted with dogive crosses and illuminated by stained glass windows depicting biblical scenes and saints, including a stained glass window commemorating the flood of the Loire in 1846.

Ranked a historic monument in 1930, the church houses remarkable elements: a 15th century crypt with frescoes depicting Christ surrounded by the symbols of the evangelists, a polychrome marble altar from the Bellary Chartreuse, and an altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The stained glass window of Saint Nicholas, patron of the marinaters, highlights the historical link between the city and the Loire, a major river for trade and transport in medieval and modern times.

The building illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of the region, combining Romanesque heritage and Gothic innovations. Its location in the Nièvre, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, makes it a testimony of cultural and artistic exchanges along the river tracks, notably thanks to the Loire, the central axis of local economic life since the Middle Ages.
