Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jacques de Puylaroque found its origins in the 12th century, a period of which today the span forming the choir remains. This vestige, although partially rebuilt, bears witness to the old Romanesque structure of the building. The vault of this span was rebuilt in the 14th century, in conjunction with the construction of the nave and side chapels, marking a phase of expansion and major transformation of the building. These medieval works reflect the liturgical and community needs of the time, as well as the evolution of regional architectural techniques.

In the 18th century, the church underwent a new campaign of modifications, with the construction of the bell tower and west façade. These additions are distinguished by their classic style, characterized by sober mouldings and the absence of foothills at the angles of the first span. The difference between these elements and the older parts underscores this historical stratification. The building, protected by an inscription to the Historical Monuments in 1927, illustrates nearly seven centuries of local architectural and religious history.

The location of the church, in the heart of Puylaroque in Tarn-et-Garonne, makes it a heritage landmark of the Occitanie region. Its architectural evolution — from novel to classic — reflects the cultural and social dynamics that marked this part of southwestern France. Today owned by the municipality, it remains a place of memory and worship, anchored in the urban landscape of this Occitan village.
