Origin and history
The Saint-Jacques de Sensacq Church, located in the municipality of Miramont-Sensacq (Department of Landes, New Aquitaine), is a religious building built between the 11th and 12th centuries. It stands on the remains of an ancient site, from which it reuses materials. This monument, isolated in the countryside, intrigues by its location and architecture, including its bell tower-wall and its Carolingian baptismal fonts by immersion. It bears witness to a larger religious set, as suggested by his patronage and the task marks identical to those of Aire-sur-l-l-Adour.
The church suffered degradation during the religious wars in the Landes, before being restored. Its structure in the shape of a boat carriage, revealed by the Historical Monuments, imitates a lost vault. Once dedicated to Saint James, it is a major milestone on Via Podiensis, one of the French routes of the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela. Since 1997, it has been listed as historical monuments, preserving its architectural and spiritual heritage.
The signatures of stone tailors on the bedside, similar to those found at Aire-sur-l Although lacking traces of original vaults, the church retains unique elements, such as its baptismal fonts, which attest to its historical and religious importance in the medieval Dutch landscape.
