Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jacques-et-Saint-Marcel de Lalande, located in the department of the Yonne in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was built between 1680 and 1694 to replace an earlier sanctuary deemed old. The building is distinguished by its facade adorned with an elaborate carved decoration, signed by Augustin Dalle, and its belfry surmounted by an arrow. Inside, a single vaulted nave leads to a cut-up bedside, while the finely-worked arch keys bear witness to the care taken in its realization. The weapons of Louis du Deffand, Marshal de camp and local lord, coupled with those of his first wife, are on the porch, highlighting his role as sponsor.

The reconstruction of the church was part of a larger architectural project led by Louis du Deffand, which had also enlarged the nearby castle between 1675 and 1694. Born into a family of military nobility, he had married an heiress of the nobility of robe, allowing him to finance this work. Her grandson, Jean-Baptiste du Deffand, will later marry Marie de Vichy-Chamron, the future Marquise of the Deffand, figure of the Enlightenment, although the latter had stayed only once in Lalande. The church, registered as a historical monument in 2006, remains a testimony of the influence of local lords on Burgundy's religious heritage.

The building, owned by the municipality, preserves characteristic stylistic elements of the late 17th century, such as the ridge vaults and the cut-sided bedside. Its history is inseparable from that of Lalande Castle, whose successive owners – noble families such as the Deffands or the Clémens – have marked the evolution of the estate. After the Revolution, the castle was sold as a national good, but the church, spared, continued to serve the parish. Today, it illustrates both classical religious architecture and the social dynamics of the Ancien Régime en Orléannais, border region between Burgundy and Centre-Val de Loire.
