Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Caylus, located in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in Occitanie, is a religious building dating back to the 15th century. Although mentioned in 1226 as a parish church, it was rebuilt from the 1340s, with major works between 1459 and 1470. This monument illustrates an architectural transition, combining Gothic rib vaults and a polygonal bedside, typical of the late Middle Ages. The nave and the first chapels were completed in 1374, while the choir, sacristy and bell tower were rebuilt under the direction of master masons Richard Condom and Hugues Procha.

Ranked as historical monuments in 1910, the church is distinguished by its complex structure, including superimposed chapels (bass and high) and a spiral staircase. Between 1500 and 1502, the northern chapels were added by master masons Antoine Mauri and Jean Roucoulèze, on behalf of Pierre Delom and the consuls of Caylus. Inside, a wooden christ carved in an abalone trunk by Ossip Zadkine adds a modern artistic touch to this medieval heritage.

Archaeological and historical sources, such as the work of Chanoine Gayne (1960) or the studies of the French Archaeology Society (2012), underline the importance of this monument in the religious landscape of Quercy. Several liturgical objects of the church are listed in the Palissy base, testifying to its rich furniture. Its architecture, marked by both Gothic and Renaissance influences, reflects the stylistic evolutions of the region between the 14th and 16th centuries.
