Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Choisel, located in the Yvelines in Île-de-France, is a religious building whose construction began in the 13th century under the impulse of Jean de Soisy, local lord. It is distinguished by its stone and sandstone architecture, typical of the region, with a central nave vaulted with quadripartite warheads. The bell tower, overlooking the chapel of the Virgin, marks the vertical elevation of the building.

In the seventeenth century, the church underwent important works commissioned by two successive priests. Pierre Loriot had the vaults of the choir and murals painted in 1623, while Pierre Masson enlarged the choir at the end of the century and installed a pulpit in 1683. A 17th century panelling, still visible, bears witness to this period of baroque beautification. The modifications continued in the 19th century with the addition of the west gate after 1838 and the construction of the arrow in 1867, signed by the architect of Dion.

The church is part of a village heritage complex, close to an old washhouse and the town hall. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1982 devotes its architectural and historical value, mixing medieval heritage, classical transformations and modern restorations. Local materials (melder, sandstone) and successive additions reflect stylistic evolutions and liturgical needs throughout the centuries.
