Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste : classification by decree of 26 September 1903
Origin and history
The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de La Couronne is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of La Couronne, Charente, New Aquitaine. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, it illustrates the Romanesque architecture of the region, with a unique nave vaulted in cradle and three apses in cul-de-four. Its bell tower, surmounted by a conical arrow with scales, rests on an octagonal drum decorated with archatures, typical of Poitevin Romanesque art.
Ranked historic monument by decree of 26 September 1903, this church is distinguished by its harmonious facade, rhythmic by superimposed archatures. Inside, the nave, covered with cradle vaults on double arches, leads to vaulted apses, reflecting the simplicity and robustness of medieval religious constructions. The building, owned by the commune, remains a major architectural testimony of the Charente.
The location of the church, on 2 rue de l'Union à La Couronne, is documented in the Merimée base, with a geographical precision deemed a priori satisfactory. Its unique nave plan and decorative elements, such as the facade arches, underline its role both spiritual and community in the rural context of the Middle Ages. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its heritage importance in the department.
