Origin and history

The church Saint-Jean-Baptiste de La Loye is a religious building built in the 11th century, located in the municipality of La Loye, in the Jura department (39). This monument, typical of the Romanesque architecture of the region, bears witness to the importance of parish churches in the medieval organization of rural territories. Its bell tower, the only protected element, was inscribed under the title of Historic Monuments by order of 2 June 1970, highlighting its heritage value.

In the 11th century, Burgundy-Franche-Comté was a region marked by the development of local seigneuries and the rise of village communities. Churches, like La Loye, played a central role in social and spiritual life: they served as places of worship, assembly, and sometimes shelter. Their construction often reflected local resources and know-how, but was part of the artistic and religious currents of the time.

The inscription of the bell tower in 1970 attests to the desire to preserve this heritage, a symbol of French rural history.
