Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste : inscription by order of 8 June 1926

Origin and history

Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Mauchamps Church is a Catholic religious building dedicated to Saint Jean-Baptiste, located in the commune of Mauchamps, Essonne. Although its original date of construction remains unknown, its nave dates back to the 15th century, while its bell tower was erected in the mid 17th century. Restoration work was undertaken in the 18th century, including the addition of woodwork.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 8 June 1926, the church benefited from a new restoration campaign in the 1980s. It embodies local religious architecture, blending medieval and classical elements, and remains an active place of worship at the heart of the community.

The Essonne, a rural and agricultural area at the time of its construction, saw in these parish churches centres of social and spiritual life. These buildings served not only as places of prayer, but also as a gathering for local festivals, baptisms and marriages, thus strengthening community ties.
