Origin and history
The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Monbran stands on the commune of Foulayronnes, in the department of Lot-et-Garonne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its choir, built in the 12th century, bears witness to its Romanesque origin, with a vaulted span in a broken cradle preceding a semicircular apse. This first building, modest but characteristic of local medieval religious architecture, served as a place of worship and assembly for the surrounding rural community.
In the seventeenth century, the church was partly rebuilt, including its west gate, adorned with continuous bosses and surmounted by a broken pediment. This period of renovation, around 1675, reflects post-Renaissance stylistic developments, with a more worked facade and an oculus bringing light. The transformations were aimed at modernizing the building while maintaining its central function in parish life.
The 19th century marked a new phase of enlargement with the addition of two lateral chapels in 1880, forming low-sides that expanded the nave. These extensions, typical of the ecclesiastical restorations of the time, met the growing population and liturgical needs. The church was officially listed as a historic monument on 11 March 1980, recognizing its heritage value.
Architecturally, the nave has two spans determined by arches in the middle of the hanger, leading to a arched forerunner in a slightly broken cradle. In the cul-de-four, this sacred space extends. The bell tower, integrated with the west façade, houses a bell and overcomes the restored gate. These elements illustrate the superposition of times, from novel to neo-classical, in a building always dedicated to worship.
The location of the church in Monbran, a hamlet of Foulayronnes, highlights its historic role as a spiritual and social hub for the inhabitants. Close to Agen, it is part of a territory marked by agriculture and river exchanges, where parish churches have structured collective life since the Middle Ages. Its inscription as historical monuments in 1980 preserved this mixed heritage, both Romanesque, classical and modern.
