Parish church: inscription by decree of 22 February 1927
Origin and history
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church of Moulins-Engilbert is a religious building built between the 15th and 16th centuries. Located in the village of Moulins-Engilbert, in the department of Nièvre (region Burgundy-Franche-Comté), it embodies the religious architecture of this pivotal period between the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Its inscription as a Historic Monument by decree of 22 February 1927 bears witness to its heritage value and the desire to preserve this local heritage.
At the time of its construction, parish churches like Saint John the Baptist played a central role in the lives of rural communities. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for social, political and cultural events. In Nièvre, a region with a rural and artisanal economy, these buildings often reflected the local prosperity and stylistic influences of periods of architectural transition.
The church is now owned by the municipality of Moulins-Engilbert, which underlines its anchoring in contemporary municipal life. Although the available sources do not specify its current state of openness to the public, its status as a Historic Monument and its location in the city centre (12 Rue du Vieux Château) make it an identity landmark for the inhabitants and a potential attraction for visitors interested in Burgundy heritage.
