Origin and history

The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church of Saint-Amans-du-Pech was first mentioned in 1278. At that time, it was an annex to the church of Beauville and depended on the archiprired of Opere and Pujols, while being linked to the seigneury of Roquecor. This small building, marked by a sober architecture, comprises two arched bays decorated with lira and thirdons, characteristic of the late Gothic style.

In contrast to the nave and the lateral chapels, rebuilt at the end of the 15th century, the portal dates from the 13th century. The vaults of the second span and chapels were later rebuilt, probably in the 18th century. In 1923, artist Gaillard Lala decorated the apses and chapels of paintings, adding a more recent artistic touch to this medieval monument.

Classified Historic Monument by decree of 2 April 1979, the church today belongs to the commune of Saint-Amans-du-Pech. Its history reflects the architectural and religious evolutions of the region, from the Middle Ages to modern beautifications. The accuracy of its location is considered very satisfactory, and it remains a testament to the local heritage in Occitanie.
