Origin and history
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church in Saint-Jean-de-Fos is a religious monument located in the eponymous village of Occitanie. Its history spans centuries, with architectural traces attested from the twelfth century. Subsequent changes, especially in the 13th, 14th, 17th and 19th centuries, bear witness to its adaptation to the liturgical needs and stylistic evolutions of each era.
This type of building, central in medieval and modern villages, served as both a place of worship, a community gathering and an identity marker. In Occitanie, parish churches like Saint-Jean-Baptiste played a key role in social organization, often linked to local agricultural and craft activities. Their construction and embellishment reflected the prosperity or difficulties of the communities they served.
