Origin and history
The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Sère, located in Esquièze-Sère in the Hautes-Pyrénées, is a historical monument entirely built in the 12th century. It retained its architectural integrity, with the exception of a window pierced in the 18th century in the choir. The building is distinguished by its three arched naves in a full-cindered cradle, separated by doubles with two rollers, and ends with three circular apses. A beef eye adorned with billets and canned torses illuminates the nave, while the first span supports a bell tower accessible by a narrow lateral staircase.
The 12th century porch, rare in its state of conservation, houses a five-rolled Romanesque portal. The latter is embellished with historied columns with capitals and a tympanum decorated with a chrism, alpha and omega, as well as symbols such as the Paschal Lamb and a pelican bearing the cross, a rare illustration of Christ nourishing the faithful spiritually. The church, classified as a Historical Monument since 1914, belongs to the commune and bears witness to southern Romanesque art in its purest expression.
The absence of major restorations, except for the addition of a window in the 18th century, makes this site an exceptional example of preserved medieval architecture. The bell tower, accessible by a lateral staircase, and the porch, complete and typical of the 12th century, reinforce its unique character. The symbols carved on the tympanum, such as the Eucharistic Pelican, underline the theological and artistic importance of the building in the religious context of the time.
