Parish Church (Box AC 102): Order of 28 February 1992

Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Sury-près-Léré, located in the Cher department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, was completely rebuilt in the early sixteenth century. This project was intended to replace an earlier building probably destroyed during the Hundred Years' War. The building is part of the movement of religious and architectural renovation that marked the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance, adopting the Gothic style flamboyant then.

The structure of the church consists of a nave with three spans, without transept, extended by a choir also divided into three spans, then by a polygonal apse. The flamboyant blazing berry illuminating choir and apse, as well as the sculpted decoration of medieval inspiration, illustrate the continuity of artistic techniques of the late 15th century. The western portal, adorned with a gable in braid, pinnacles and winged monsters, bears witness to the decorative richness of this period.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 28 February 1992, the church now belongs to the municipality of Sury-near Léré. Its architecture and decor make it a remarkable example of the region's religious heritage, reflecting both the past destruction and the artistic development of the emerging modern era.
