Origin and history
The Romanesque church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Toulon-sur-Arroux, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire, was originally built in the 12th century in the enclosure of the seigneurial castle of the village. It served as a parish church until 1878, when a new sanctuary was erected. From then on, the building was successively transformed into a wooden warehouse, wine cellar, barn, garage and party room, reflecting its adaptation to local needs after its decommissioning.
After the Revolution, the church experienced various uses, including barn, stable and even theatre at the beginning of the 20th century. Desacralized, it became the property of the association Les Amis du Dardon in 1969, which now ensures its preservation. Ranked a historic monument on October 29, 1971, it is open to the public in summer and hosts exhibitions, testifying to its cultural and heritage anchor.
The building, marked by renovations in the 13th and 17th centuries, illustrates the architectural and functional evolution of rural churches in Burgundy. Its history also reflects the socio-economic changes of Toulon-sur-Arroux, where the building, once the spiritual heart of the village, became a versatile place for the community. Its current ranking and associative management underscore its regional heritage importance.
