Parish Church (Box C 209): inscription by decree of 2 November 1976
Origin and history
The church Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Tox, located in the Corsican village of the same name, dates from the 18th century. It succeeds a primitive Romanesque building, some of which were re-used in the current masonries. The architecture includes a main nave, a campanile and an annex confraternity chapel, reflecting the stylistic and liturgical evolutions of the period.
Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 2 November 1976, this parish church (cadastral reference C 209) belongs to the commune of Tox, in Upper Corsica. Its registration reflects its heritage importance, although its precise location remains approximate (level 6/10 depending on the sources). Preserved elements, such as Romanesque slabs, provide an overview of the historical strata of the site.
The building is part of the 18th century Corsican religious landscape, marked by the reconstruction or beautification of parish churches. These buildings played a central role in community life, hosting both offices, confraternity gatherings and social events. Their architecture, often sober, met local needs while integrating reminiscences from earlier periods, as evidenced by the materials reused in Tox.
