Origin and history

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Villepinte, located in the Aude department in the Occitanie region, is a building whose origins date back to the 12th century. At that time, a Romanesque rural chapel, known as the Roumenguière, already existed on the site. This chapel, characterized by a semicircular apse and a triumphal arch, was later incorporated into a new flamboyant building built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. This transfer marked the displacement of the former parish church, originally located in the village, to a location outside the fortified enclosure.

The flamboyant nave of the church was probably completed before 1502, accompanied by three contemporary chapels. A fourth chapel, to the north, covered with liernes and thirdons, was added around 1547, reflecting a separate foundation. The initial absence of a bell tower was filled in 1807, when a porch was also erected and later in 1854, arches inspired by Philibert Delorme. The sanctuary, of pentagonal shape, is illuminated by flamboyant windows, while a central cruciferous pillar, composed of committed columns, supports the arches of the spans.

The building was listed as historic monuments on November 16, 1949, recognizing its heritage value. Today, the church belongs to the municipality of Villepinte and retains a variety of architectural elements, witness to its multiple phases of construction. Its history reflects the religious, social and artistic evolutions of the region, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
