Origin and history
The church Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte-Latine, located in La Louptière-Thénard in the Aube department (Great East), is a religious building built in the sixteenth century. It is distinguished by its Latin cross plan, its five-sided apse and its vault. Although mostly dated from the 16th century, it retains a clogged window of the 12th century, a witness to an earlier occupation. The interior houses a monumental 16th century wooden altarpiece, as well as two 18th century stone altarpieces, probably from Burgos, Spain, offered in 1917 by Marguerite Thénard. A statue of Saint Remi in polychrome wood (16th century) and a wrought iron lutrin (18th century) complete this exceptional furniture heritage.
The church underwent reshuffles in the 19th century, reflecting the architectural and liturgical developments of the time. Historically, La Louptière-Thénard, an independent parish in 1490, became a branch of Traînel in 1636, marking a change in its religious organization. The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 25 September 1948, thereby recognizing its heritage value. The presence of furniture from the 16th and 18th centuries underscores its continuing role in local spiritual and community life, from the Middle Ages to the modern era.
The location of the church at 18 Rue Jean Charles de Relongue and its status as communal property make it a place anchored in the territory. Its inscription among the historic monuments of the Aube bears witness to its importance in the architectural and religious heritage of the Champagne-Ardenne region (now the Grand Est).
