Origin and history
The church Saint-Jean de Libourne, located Place Saint-Jean in the department of Gironde, finds its origins in the fourteenth century, period of its initial construction. This religious monument, typical of the medieval Aquitaine heritage, went through centuries before undergoing a major transformation in the 19th century. Only the choir of the original building was preserved, bearing witness to its primitive Gothic heritage.
The reconstruction of the church, carried out between 1835 and 1855, is part of the neo-Gothic movement that marked the 19th century in France. This ambitious project aimed to modernize the building while respecting a revised medieval aesthetic. The works, completed in the middle of the century, gave the church its present appearance, characteristic of the ecclesiastical restorations of the period.
At the end of the 19th century, the interior decoration of the St John's church was made by the artist Jabouin, whose work helped enrich the ornamentation of the building. Ranked among the Historical Monuments by order of 9 May 1997, the church now belongs to the municipality of Libourne. Its inscription underscores its heritage value, mixing medieval heritage and 19th century creations.
The location of the church on Saint John Square makes it a central point of the city of Libourne, in a department marked by a high density of historical monuments. Its architecture reflects stylistic developments and the challenges of preserving religious heritage in New Aquitaine, a region rich in comparable buildings.
