Origin and history

The Church of San Giovanni Evangelista (Saint John Evangelist) of Santo-Pietro-di-Tenda, dating from the 16th century, is an emblematic monument of Corsican religious heritage. It is the parish church of the village, built at the foot of the Monte Brumica, and is part of a baroque ensemble including the chapel of the now extinct Santa Croce Brotherhood. These two buildings, listed in the inventory of historical monuments since 2 August 1990, reflect the religious architecture of the region, marked by pisane influences from the twelfth century, as evidenced by the nearby San Giuseppe convent, founded in 1630 on the bases of a Romanesque church.

The village of Santo-Pietro-di-Tenda, formerly the capital of Santo Pietro in the 16th century, was a major religious and administrative centre of Nebbio, a microregion in northern Corsica. Pevania, mentioned from the twelfth century, housed Capuchin monks and played a central role in the local ecclesiastical organization. The Conventual ensemble, now partially restored and transformed into a rural gite, illustrates the historical importance of the site, linked to figures like Pascal Paoli, who organized consultations there in the eighteenth century during the Corsican revolt against Genoa.

The Agriates region, where the commune is located, is rich in prehistoric remains, such as the dolmen of Monte-Revinco, classified as a historical monument since 1889. This neolithic site, located in a military range, attests to an ancient human occupation, supplemented by medieval habitats and traces of the Roman presence. The church of Saint John, with its bell tower and chapel of the Penitents, thus embodies both the religious heritage and the turbulent history of Corsica, between genoese influences, local revolts and architectural heritage.

In the 19th century, the municipality, then called Santo Pietro, was incorporated into the canton of Tenda before taking its present name in 1828. The building, a communal property, remains a symbol of the cultural and religious resistance of the region, marked by conflicts such as the revolt against Genoa (1729-1769) or the French occupation. Today, the church and its chapel, being restored, continue to attract attention for their historical value and Baroque architecture, typical of the Corsican religious buildings of modern times.

The geographical context of Santo-Pietro-di-Tenda, between maquis and wild coastline, also influenced its development. The village, built on a hillside, is surrounded by hamlets like Casta, and its traditional economy is based on breeding, viticulture and olive oil production. These activities, combined with increasing tourism linked to beaches like Saleccia or hiking trails, highlight the link between built heritage and natural environment, characteristic of North Corsica.
