Origin and history
Saint John de Verneuil-sur-Avre Church is a 16th-century Catholic building in the department of Eure, on the municipality of Verneuil d'Avre and Iton. Originally classified as a historical monument in 1943, it experienced a turbulent history: disused during the French Revolution, it was transformed into a grain hall before being seriously damaged by the 1944 bombings. Today, only remains remain, recalling its religious and architectural past.
The construction of the church extends over the 15th and 16th centuries, according to available sources. Its architecture reflects the styles of this period, although the precise details of its design are not always documented. After its desecration, the building lost its primary function, but its ranking in 1943 is a testament to its heritage importance. The destruction of 1944 marked a turning point, reducing the church to the state of ruins, preserved as historical memory.
The remains of Saint John Church are now protected, with a precise location deemed satisfactory. Although the building is no longer active, it remains a point of interest for those passionate about history and religious architecture. The sources available, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, provide additional information, including information on its registration as historical monuments in 1968 for the former St. Lawrence Church, located nearby.
